Not Measuring Correctly for Toilet Placement
There’s a measurement called the toilet “rough-in” that determines the distance between the toilet’s bolt caps on the floor to the finished wall. The standard in U.S. homes today is 12 inches, so that is what most toilets are built for. However, in many older homes you may actually find a rough-I of 10 inches or 14 inches. In the best case scenario, you’ll have to go return the toilet and purchase a new one. In the worst case scenario however, you may have to move the drain, which is a huge—not to mention expensive—hassle.
Not Properly Venting Drains
Let’s say you are running new sink drain lines for your bathroom remodel. Are you doing in properly? There are some homes that have S-trap type drains that are not properly vented. The reason ventilation is so important is because your sink trap can get sucked dry, and will no longer function as a barrier between your bathroom and your sewer system. Without the standing water, unhealthy and potentially dangerous gases can seep into your home. Additionally, insects and other vermin will have access to your home.
Not Sloping the Shower Floor Properly
The first layer of your shower’s base is masonry. The liner is installed over this base. If the masonry isn’t slanted correctly, the water will not flow to the drain. Needless to say, you’ll constantly experience standing water in your shower, which leads to a breeding ground for mold and mildew.
